Dr. Ilker Ersoy is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri’s Institute for Data Science and Informatics, where he serves as a core faculty member in the Data Science and Analytics Master’s Program. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia and B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Control and Computer Engineering from Istanbul Technical University. Dr. Ersoy brings more than two decades of expertise in machine learning and computer vision with an emphasis on biomedical image analysis and aerial surveillance applications. His teaching focuses on graduate-level courses in data visualization and visual communication, applied AI/ML, and statistical methods. He has also significantly contributed to curriculum development from the start of the DSA program. A dedicated mentor, he has advised over 20 capstone projects and served on numerous thesis committees.
With an extensive background in computer vision and machine learning, Dr. Ersoy’s research spans a broad spectrum—from biomedical imaging and whole-slide pathology image analysis to aerial surveillance and target tracking applications. His contributions to the development of object detection and segmentation methods, and deep learning has supported federal-sponsored research, including projects with NIH, ARL, AFRL. He has authored or co-authored over 50 publications widely published in both academic journals and international conferences, reflecting a career at the intersection of computational innovation and translational science. He is an active member of the scientific community, serving on review panels for the NSF, program committees for conferences and workshops.
