MUIDSI GSO Hosts 2025 Generative AI for Social Good Hackathon

Congratulations to the MUIDSI Graduate Student Organization for hosting the 2025 Generative AI for Social Good Hackathon from February 24-28. A total of 17 teams, with 47 participants from diverse academic backgrounds showcased their innovative AI-driven solutions, addressing real-world challenges through the power of Generative AI.

This year’s competition fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, with students representing nine different departments, including Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, The Department of Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics and Medical Epidemiology (BBME), Life Sciences, Statistics, and the Institute for Data Science and Informatics. Participants presented groundbreaking projects, competing in a highly engaging and intellectually stimulating environment.

This years winners are:

1st Place – BudgetCuts.AI (Analyzing the impact of government budget cuts) – Will Baskett, Sam Spell, Kun-Yi Chen
2nd Place – VisionAI (AI-powered emergency assistance tool for the visually impaired) – Bhanu Vangala, Govardhan Khadakkar, Sowmya Guda
3rd Place – Voice-Based Healthcare Chatbot (Supporting underserved communities) – Shivam Shrivastava, Soham Basu, Souvik Bag
4th Place – MAGNA LECTA (A student-empowering learning tool) – Sanjit Subhash, Tiyasha Guha, Tarun Mummidi

The Hackathon was honored to host a distinguished panel of judges and esteemed guest speakers who shared valuable insights on AI, research, and innovation. Guest speakers included Dr. Marisa Chrysochoou (Dean of the College of Engineering), Dr. Randi E. Foraker (Chair of Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics, and Medical Epidemiology – BBME), Dr. Syed Kamrul Islam (Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences), Dr. Erika Boerman (Director of Translational Bioscience at the School of Medicine), and Dave Clements (IBM Americas Sales, Technology Executive – State of Missouri).
