Dr. Sanda Erdelez is an Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science. Her research expertise is in the study of human information behavior, especially information search behavior and information needs and uses in an electronic environment. She is also interested in research methodologies for conducting usability evaluation of web-based information retrieval systems and is the founding director of the Information Experience Laboratory (IE Lab) at the University of Missouri — the state-of-the-art laboratory for conducting usability studies. Under her leadership the IE Lab was engaged in usability evaluation of several medical information systems and services, including a nursing informatics application for Tiger Place (an independent living community in Columbia, MO) and a medical informatics application HomePsych (mental health care). Her role is to design and conduct usability evaluation studies throughout the process of information system development and thus ensure that standard principles of usability are implemented for each specific category of the system users. Dr. Erdelez is currently serving as a co-PI on a NSF funded research project that uses usability evaluation techniques in the study of medical image use behaviors.
